USTM Mourns the Passing of Prof. Abdul Matin of AMU

9th Mile, Khanapara, Ri-Bhoi – Wednesday, November 19, 2025: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) is deeply saddened to announce the demise of Prof. Abdul Matin, an eminent social scientist and a selfless, compassionate scholar of global repute.
In this hour of grief, USTM extends its heartfelt condolences to Prof. Matin’s family, his former colleagues, students, friends and everyone whose lives he enriched with his wisdom and warmth.
Shri Mahbubul Hoque, Hon’ble Chancellor of USTM and Chairman of ERD Foundation, expressed grief and said, “Sad News! ERDF and USTM mourn the loss of Prof. Abdul Matin, a former professor at AMU, an eminent social scientist, compassionate human being, and inspiring academician, whose legacy will continue to guide generations. He was associated selflessly with USTM for the last few years. May Allah Subhanuhu grant Jannatul Ferdous to him!”
Prof. Matin left for his heavenly abode on 19th November 2025, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to illuminate generations of students, researchers and social workers.
A distinguished Professor, who served USTM with unwavering dedication, Prof. Matin was Professor of Sociology and a pillar of both the Department of Social Work and the Department of Sociology until his retirement. Before joining USTM, he had a long and illustrious career at the Department of Sociology, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh). Prof. Matin made it a point to visit USTM through his own initiative.
Prof. Matin’s contributions to the world of ideas were profound and far-reaching. Since 2011, he has served as Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious Journal of Exclusion Studies, shaping critical discourse on marginalisation and social justice. His pioneering vision also led him to found the Research Committee on Digital Sociology under the Indian Sociological Society – a testament to his foresight in recognising the transformative intersection of technology and society.
