USTM defeated JNU in terms of women students’ enrollment – Prof. M Jagadesh Kumar, VC, JNU
9th September, 17, USTM : University of Science & Technology Meghalaya hosted 3rd Convocation at the Techno City Campus today. Prof. Jagadesh Kumar, Hon’be Vice Chancellor, JNU, Prof. Jayant M Modak, Dy. Director, IISC, Bangalore, Prof. G D Sharma, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Bilaspur University had graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Guest of Honors respectively. Along with them, Dr. P G Rao, Vice Chancellor, USTM, Prof. Amarjyoti Chaudhury, C V Raman Chair Professor, USTM, Dr. R K Sharma, Pro-VC, USTM, Deans and HoDs of different schools were present.
In the 3rd Convocation, a total number of 905 students which includes 744 at the PG level, 161 at the UG level and 2 Ph.D scholars, had received degrees. Sources from the university authority also informed “we have resolved to confer honorary Doctor of Science to Prof. Darlando Khathing, Vice Chancellor, North East Christian University and Honorary D.Litt to Dr. Abdul Gafoor, renowned pediatrician from UAE for their remarkable contribution towards society”.This is a token gesture of showing our reverence to both the Nuclear Scientist and eminent Physician. It is worth mentioning that Prof. Khating had laid his stint as Nuclear Scientist through his numerous research works carried out at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Trombay. He was awarded the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Trust Fellowship (UK) and was attached to the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Oxfordshire, England. On the other hand, Dr. Abdul Gafoor, pediatrician from the prestigious Trivandrum Medical College in Kerala and medical practitioner from UAE, leads the Bright India Foundation, a philanthropic arm, working on the educational and healthcare systems of the underprivileged in the Northern Region of India. Dr. Abdul Gafoor has also established the Woodlem Park Schools, an educational establishment devoted to providing world class education to children in India and the UAE.
The Convocation Program 2017 began with the welcome address by Shri Mahbubul Hoque, Hon’ble Chancellor, USTM explaining the journey of USTM from a humble beginning with just seven students in the year 2011 and its gradual emergence as a Centre for Excellence in research, innovation and entrepreneurship development. While welcoming the graduating students Shri Hoque said “Sh. Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM stated “For me Convocation marks the beginning of another day, another journey in your career, however difficulties you may face in this journey, I would like to assure all our graduating students, research scholars, aspirants of different competitive exams that whenever you feel disheartened, come back to your Alma Mater, this University will stand behind you”. Dr. P G Rao, Chancellor, USTM in his report also had detailed about how USTM is steadily continuing its progress towards excellence. It was followed by the conference of Honorary Doctorate of Science (D.Sc) and Honorary Doctorate of Literature (D. Litt) to Prof. Darlando Khathing, Vice Chancellor, North East Christian University and Dr. Abdul Gafoor. Prof. Khating in his acceptance remark stated “I urged all the graduate, post-graduate students and Ph.D scholars to be honest and then only your goals and aspirations will be achieved”. This is the third convocation of University of Science and Technology Meghalaya and the newly born baby, who was limping on the ground in the year 2011, the year when it first saw the light of inception, has now grown up, bloomed into a matured adult. It’s expanding everyday, expanding its avenues, eight different schools of studies, more than 45 courses under those schools, research, seminars, workshops, students’ exchange, internship, filed visit, industry visit, visit by the corporate magnets and so on and so forth. And convocation which marks the culmination of a stipulated time-frame within which a large number of students get themselves acquainted with the social, cultural and intellectual as well as academic ambience of the university, taught with a specific mission and then come out as Social Ambassador of the university. “This is the day when the students do realize that they are the real Ambassadors of USTM. And hence, they are entrusted with a greater mission, mission to spread the vision of USTM” – stated Dr. P G Rao, Vice Chancellor of USTM.
