The Department of Rural Development was started in 2012 with 6 students for an M A in Rural Development while the present strength is 75 including Masters and PhD. Being multidisciplinary in nature, the department undertakes both teaching and research in the areas of rural development, agriculture, indigenous technology, extension education and gender issues. To satisfy the ongoing demand, the department provides both theoretical and practical exposure to MRD students in various areas relating to the multidisciplinary courses within the timeframe of 4 semesters. In addition to this, the department organizes various conferences, seminars, workshops, and invited talks for promoting rural development as a necessity of India’s economy and develop interest in students on contemporary issues related to rural development. The department is also actively engaged in the research activities pertaining to different issues in rural and social development, microfinance & rural credit, documentation of indigenous knowledge of North East tribes, Local self Government and Agriculture Extension. To empower the rural women, the department provides a platform for the local women to sell local products in the university premise as “Local Haat”.
