USTM’s Courtroom to Conscience: Legal Luminaries Inspire Budding Legal Minds

9th Mile, Khanapara, Ri-Bhoi, Saturday, November 8, 2025: The University School of Law and Research (USLR), University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), in collaboration with the All India Lawyers Union, Assam Unit, organised an enlightening talk on “Constitutional Values and Professional Ethics: Guiding Principles for Skill Development of Budding Lawyers” on November 8, 2025, at the NKC Auditorium, USTM.
The event featured two distinguished legal luminaries -Mr. Asish Das Gupta, Senior Advocate, Gauhati High Court, and Mr. A.R. Sikdar, Advocate, Gauhati High Court – who shared their profound insights on the symbiotic relationship between constitutional ideals and ethical practice in the legal profession.
In his address, Mr Asish Das Gupta spoke on “Professional Ethics: The Cornerstone of Legal Practice”, emphasising that honesty, integrity, and accountability form the moral fabric of legal advocacy. He urged students to view law not merely as a profession, but as a public service rooted in justice and fairness.
Mr. A.R. Sikdar, in his talk titled “Constitutional Values: The Soul of the Indian Constitution,” reflected on the enduring relevance of the Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties, and the Directive Principles of State Policy. Drawing from real-life examples, he illustrated how constitutional values continue to guide and shape a democratic society.
The session commenced with a welcome address by Dr Anurekha Goswami, Associate Professor, USLR, USTM, followed by a felicitation of the guests. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. (Dr.) Baharul Islam, Dean of USLR, USTM, emphasised the importance of cultivating ethical awareness and constitutional literacy among aspiring legal professionals.
The talk provided an inspiring platform for law students to reflect on the deeper responsibilities of legal practice. It underscored that understanding constitutional values and professional ethics is essential not only for skill development but also for upholding the dignity and credibility of the legal profession.
