USTM Celebrates National Science Day
9th Mile, Khanapara, Ri Bhoi, March 1, 2025: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) commemorated National Science Day 2025 with a vibrant celebration organized by the Departments of Physics and Chemistry, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), USTM. The highlight of the celebration was a poster competition based on the theme “Exploring the Wonders of Science: Celebration of National Science Day 2025.”
Adding to the celebration, the Department of Computer Science of USTM observed the day through a special outreach programme at ASSISI School, Kiling, Meghalaya, where students engaged with young learners through live science demonstrations and an interactive science quiz.
The celebration at USTM began with a warm welcome address by Dr. Murchana Khusroo, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics. Students from various departments across USTM enthusiastically participated in the poster competition, showcasing their creative ideas and scientific understanding through well-crafted presentations. The competition was evaluated by Dr. Faizuddin Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, and Dr. Mohit Lal Deb, Assistant Director, Advanced Research Centre. Before announcing the results, the judges delivered an encouraging address, motivating students to venture beyond textbooks and embrace hands-on scientific exploration.
The winners of the poster competition were Ms. Diana Seram (Department of Earth Science) won first prize for her poster titled “Vision to Innovation”; Ms. Jubaida Parveen, Ms. Sabana Begum Laskar, and Ms. Rashmi Hazarika (School of Pharmaceutical Sciences) for their poster titled “Global Competitiveness in Science and Technology”; Mr. Abhijit Nath, Ms. Nilufar Rezwana, and Mr. Sakil Ahmed (Department of Chemistry) won 3rd prize for their poster titled “From Waste to Wonders: How Plastics Recycling Fueled the Success of Mission Mangal.”
As part of the outreach activities, the Department of Computer Science, in collaboration with the NSS Unit of USTM, conducted a programme titled “Science for All: Reaching Out to the Community” at ASSISI School, Kiling on February 28, 2025.
The initiative aimed to spark scientific interest among school students through engaging science experiments and interactive demonstrations tailored for students from Classes 1 to 7. The live experiments were designed to make science fun, accessible, and thought-provoking for young learners.
The outreach event also featured a Science Quiz, where enthusiastic participation from the students added to the excitement. Winners were recognized and awarded prizes, further encouraging their curiosity and interest in science.
