Union Minister Shri Ramdas Athawale commends USTM’s Inclusive Education Model

Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya | 3rd April, 2026: Hon’ble Shri Ramdas Bandu Athawale, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India along, paid a courtesy visit to the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) today and held an extensive and meaningful interaction with the Hon’ble Chancellor Shri Mahbubul Hoque, along with Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof GD Sharma.
During his visit, the Hon’ble Minister engaged in a detailed discussion with the Hon’ble Chancellor and Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. G. D. Sharma on key developmental priorities in higher education, with particular emphasis on inclusive growth, social equity, and access to quality education for marginalised communities. The deliberations highlighted the pivotal role being played by USTM in transforming the educational landscape of the North East by empowering students from economically weaker and underprivileged backgrounds.
The Hon’ble Minister lauded USTM’s commitment to inclusive education and specifically appreciated that nearly 20 percent of the university’s student population comprises individuals from economically weaker sections of society who are pursuing their studies under special scholarship schemes. He acknowledged this as a significant and commendable initiative that reflects the institution’s deep-rooted commitment to social justice and equitable access to higher education.
Shri Athawale also appreciated the university’s holistic approach towards education, which combines academic excellence with strong social responsibility. He noted that USTM has emerged as a beacon of hope for first-generation learners, providing them with opportunities to excel through quality infrastructure, experienced faculty, and a nurturing academic environment.
The interaction further covered USTM’s various initiatives in skill development, career-oriented training, and capacity building aimed at enhancing employability and self-reliance among students. The Hon’ble Minister expressed satisfaction over the university’s efforts in aligning its academic programmes with national priorities and developmental goals.
Reaffirming the Government’s commitment to supporting institutions that promote inclusive growth, Shri Athawale assured continued cooperation and support from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment towards USTM’s future initiatives and expansion plans, particularly those focused on the upliftment and empowerment of disadvantaged sections through education and skill development.
