Biswanath Anchalik Bihu Dol Emerges Champion, Wins ₹1 Lakh at USTM Mukoli Bihu Competition

Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya | April 24, 2026: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) successfully hosted the vibrant Mukoli Bihu Competition as part of its grand Rongali Utsav 2026, celebrating the rich cultural heritage and spirited traditions of Assam.
The USTM campus came alive with rhythmic beats of the dhol, graceful movements, and high-energy performances as participating teams across various parts of Assam competed in two categories—senior and junior—celebrating the true essence of Mukoli Bihu. A total of 32 teams registered for the competition, reflecting its wide appeal and enthusiastic participation. The event witnessed an overwhelming response from students, guests, and cultural enthusiasts alike.
The competition was conducted in the esteemed presence of distinguished dignitaries and an accomplished panel of judges comprising Bihu experts Mr Somnath Ojha, the first Bihu Rani of Assam and cultural icon Mrs Madhurima Choudhary, Mrs Shyamontika Sarma, Mr Jayanta Sonowal, and former Bihu Samragri of Assam, Mrs Seema Kakoty, whose expeBihuSpecial Jiurtise added depth and credibility to the evaluation process. The event was also graced by famous Assamese actress Nishita Goswamee as a special judge and guest.
The Prize Distribution Ceremony was graced by the Hon’ble Chancellor of USTM, Shri Mahbubul Hoque, Vice Chancellor Prof GD Sharma, along with senior academicians and the expert panel of judges who felicitated the winners and encouraged all participants to continue preserving and promoting the rich traditions of Bihu.
The Mukoli Bihu Competition at USTM Rongali Utsav 2026 witnessed remarkable performances across both categories, reflecting the richness of Assam’s cultural traditions. In the Rongmon Category, Jhumura Kala Kendra, Noonmati secured first prize with a cash award of ₹50,000, followed by Gagana Semoniya Bihu Group in second place with ₹30,000, and Guwahati Public School in third place with ₹20,000, all of whom received certificates.

In the Senai Category, Biswanath Anchalik Bihu Dol emerged as the winner, earning the top prize of ₹1,00,000 along with certificates. At the same time, Panchayajanya Bihuwa Dol secured second place with ₹75,000, and Friendship Club Bihuwa Dol claimed third place with ₹50,000 and certificates. As this marked the first edition of the Mukoli Bihu Competition at USTM, all other participating teams were also felicitated with consolation prizes of ₹10,000 and certificates each, recognising their enthusiastic participation and contribution to the success of the event.
The celebrations extended into the evening with a series of traditional games and cultural performances held at the USTM Sports Field. A kids’ celebration of Bihu Dance, where we brought together the kids of our faculty and staff with much anticipation, while we also had the honour of bringing joy and laughter to the audience, with the much-anticipated Tug of War between Team Chancellor and Team Vice Chancellor added excitement and friendly rivalry to the occasion.
A special highlight of the evening was a tribute to the renowned Assamese musical icon Zubeen Garg through a captivating dance performance, followed by an electrifying act by our special evening guest, talented Jiu. USTM Rongali Utsav 2026 stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to promoting cultural heritage, fostering community engagement, and celebrating the spirit of togetherness.
