About the Centre

The Centre for Advanced International Studies (CAIS) is USTM’s advanced education and research centre dedicated to education, training, research, innovation, and global collaboration to train future policymakers and global leaders and to design, develop, test and share solutions to complex problems of diplomacy and international affairs. The Mission of the Centre for Advanced International Studies is to enable students and scholars to acquire, create, innovate, develop, and share knowledge, concepts, theories, insights, and best practices on international relations and diplomacy and to apply these knowledge, concepts, and theories to find solutions to real world problems and thus contribute to towards making a better world. The Centre for Advanced International Studies is committed to be a Centre of Excellence in advanced education and research in diplomacy and international affairs.

The centre is led by its Director Dr. Rejaul Karim Laskar, whose book on India’s diplomacy (published by Oxford University Press, a Department of the University of Oxford) has been described by former National Security Advisor of India Shivshankar Menon as “a seminal addition to works on Indian diplomacy” and by former Foreign Secretary of India Shyam Saran as “a major contribution to contemporary diplomatic history”.

 

Global Collaborations: Core Strength of our Centre

One of the core strengths of the Centre for Advanced International Studies, USTM is its global networks and collaborations with professors of the world’s leading universities. Several eminent professors of the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Princeton University, University of California-Berkeley are members of the editorial board of the journal of our centre (for details please visit: https://ujis.ustm.ac.in).

The global network of our centre will help our students get global exposure during the course and will be a lifelong source of strength for our students as they pursue an international career after the completion of the course.

About the Programme

The MA in International Relations will provide a broad overview of the concepts, theories and practices of international relations. The programme will familiarize students with various concepts, theories, and aspects of relations between nations. It will also familiarize students with the workings of international organizations as well as diplomatic missions. It will also familiarize students with important global issues. The ultimate aim of the programme is to develop among the students a deeper understanding of various aspects of discourses as well as practices in international relations. The programme will cover all the important and basic concepts in the field of international relations, including the latest developments in the field.

The centre will ensure internship opportunities for the students in Embassies, High Commissions, UN Agencies, MEA, think tanks, international NGOs, leading media houses, etc.

The programme is designed to ensure that after the successful completion of the course the students will be well prepared to pursue a diverse range of careers options, including the following:

– Indian Foreign Service

– International Organizations

– Embassies and High Commissions

– International Non-Governmental Organizations

– International Think Tanks

-Geo-political risk assessment consultancies

-The programme will also be extremely beneficial for those with a diploma or degree in journalism and want to become journalists of international affairs.

For those students who want to pursue PhD in International Relations in Indian or foreign universities, this programme can act as a foundation course. This programme will also be helpful to those who are planning appear in the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

Duration: 2 Years

Eligibility: Graduate with 45% marks in any discipline (5% relaxation for reserved categories)
