The University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya regularly organizes
workshops and seminars on issues relevant to their fields of study and also to
our times. Below is a list of seminars and events organized by USTM for the
benefits of its students:
• Panel Discussion “NER VISION -2020 role of Universities Institutions”. Where most of VC of the north east participated in the panel
discussion along with several renowned educationist and social activist. The
event was held on 5th September, 2009.
• USTM and NEDFI jointly organized a National seminar on commercial cultivation
of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants in North East India on 10th February 2010.
• USTM and CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat (formerly RRL) jointly organized a International
Conference on “Global Warming Climate change vis-à-vis management of Natural
Resources in North East India” on 22nd and 23rd March 2010. The conferences
tried to focus the impending impacts of climate change in the region and to find
out ways and means top mitigate the same.
• An felicitation cum interactive session was organized by USTM to honoured 9
(Nine) former Vice-Chancellors of the North Eastern Region in recognition of
their contribution in the field of education & Research on the occasion of New
Year’s Day 2011. His Excellency R.S. Mooshahary, Honorable Governor of Meghalaya
was the Chief Guest for the event. The following Vice Chancellors were

• “Perception of Educational need of NE India towards creation of knowledge
based society & sustainable livelihood”- A brainstorming workshop was organised
by USTM on 17th of December, 201. The workshop was graced by Dr. Hiranya Nath ,
an eminent Professor, Sam Houstan University, USA.
• An felicitation cum interactive session was organized by USTM to honoured the
Literary Stalwarts of the North Eastern Region in recognition of their
contribution in the field of education & Research on the 7th of January, 2012.
The following Literary Stalwarts were felicitated- Sri B. S. Narzary, Sri Homen
Borgohain, Sri Arunj Sarma, Smti Eli Ahmed, Dr. Pramod Ch. Bhattacharjee, Dr.
Lakshmi Nandan Bora, Sri Atulananda Goswami.
• A National Seminar on “ Human Rights Issues in NE India” was conducted by USTM on the 12th February, 2012. The Key speakers were Dr. Justice Aftab Hussain
Saikia, Chairperson, Assam Human Rights Commission and Former Chief Justice, J&K
and Shri P. J. Baruah, Executive Editor, The Assam Tribune.
• A Panel Discussion on “ India- Bangladesh Relations- Beyond Trade & Commerce”
was organised by USTM on 13th June, 2012. The Discussion was graced by His
Excellency, Sri R. S. Mooshahary, Governor of Meghalaya and His Excellency, Sri
Tarik Ahmed Karim, High Commissioner of Bangladesh.
• USTM and University of Tartu, Estonia, has jointly organised an International
Symposium on “ Genres of Beliefs from Folkloristic Perspective” on the 4th & 5th
of February, 2013 in the University campus. A host of Foreign delegates from
Europe, Asia and USA had participated in the Symposium. The Key Speakers were
Prof. Ulo Valk, University of Tartu, Astonia, Prof. William Westerman, USA, Dr.
Sibnath Barman etc.
• A Seminar on Higher Education was organised as a part of the North East
Teachers' Congress-2013 held on the 22nd & 23rd of March, 2013 in collaboration
with CSIR-NEIST. The Seminar was richly participated by a no of participants and
the some eminent Speakers like- Prof. Sai Prakash & Prof Ratan Tookey both from
Osmania University, Prof. N. K. Choudhury, Former VC, GU, Prof. Ashwini Baruah,
Prof. Mrinal Kr. Das, Prof Balendra Kr. Das, Dr. U. C. Kalita and Mr. P. J.
Baruah of The Assam Tribune.
• A Panel Discussion on “ Higher Education in Arunachal Pradesh- Problems &
Prospects” was organised by USTM in Itanagar on the 29th of July, 2013. Prof.
Tamo Mibang, VC-RGUand Dr. Joram Begi, Director, Higher & Technical Education,
Arunachal Pradesh graced the occasion.
• The School of Business Sciences, USTM had organised a Seminar on Interest
Free Banking on the 17th of August, 2013. Dr. Shariq Nisar, Director, TASIS was
the key Speaker.
• A Scholastic Discourse on ” Life & Creations of Dr. Bhupedn Hazarika”
was organised by USTM on the 7th of September, 2013 at NEDFi House. The occasion was
graced by Dri R. S. Mooshahary, Former Governor of Meghalaya and the Key- Note
Speaker was Prof. Amarjyoti Choudhury, Pro-VC, TEZU. A book translated by Ms.
Gitali Saikia, Research Scholar, USTM was also released on the occasion.
• An ICSSR, New Delhi sponsored 10- day Research Methodology Workshop for
Scholars of Social Sciences was organised by USTM from 9th of December, 2013 to
18th December, 2013. The Workshop saw eminent academicians parting knowledge on
Research Methodology and its relevant fields. Some Important Resource Personals
were- Prof. Partho Ghosh, Dr. R. K. Satpathy, NEHU, Prof Archana Sharma, Prof.
B. P.Misra, Dr. Sukanya Sharma, IIT-G, Dr. Archana Upadhay, JNU, Dr. Polly

Dr. K. K. Das etc.
• USTM in collaboration with Madhavdev College, Narayanpur has organized a
National Seminar on “ Challenges in Higher Education- A North East Perspective”
on the 29th of January, 2014 in Madhavdev College, Narayanpur.
• A Ministry of Minority Affairs, Govt. of India sponsored National Seminar on
“ Educational Status of Minority Women in NE India- Challenges & Future
Prospects” was organised by USTM on the 1st of March, 2014 in the University
Campus. The Key speakers were- Sri. Allen Brooks, Member Assam State Minority
Commission, Sri. Samsul Hoque Mazumdar, Former Director, Planning & Development,
Govt. Of Assam and Prof. Monirul Hussain, GU among other speakers
• Junior College Principal’s Meet (JCPM)-2014 : USTM in association with
RIST organized an unique meet of Principals of Junior Colleges of North East on
May 3, 2014 in the Techno city Campus where almost 60 Principals and senior
teachers from various Junior colleges of Assam and Meghalaya participated. The
theme of the meet was “Career Counseling and IT Enabled Teaching Learning”.
Junior colleges from remote corners of Assam like Tezpur, Kalgachia, Nalbari,
Hailakandi, Badarpur, Narayanpur, Barpeta, Bijni, Titabor, Jorhat, Udalguri,
Hajo, Kamalpur, Tinsukia and Shillong had participated in this meet. The
participants have stated that they have been benefitted by the various Technical
sessions and such an initiative will help them guide their students better in a
situation where all the importance from government goes to the degree colleges
of the locality rather than the junior colleges.
• North East College
Principals’ Conclave (NCPC)-2014 : This conclave was organized by University
of Science & Technology, Meghalaya in association with Assam College Principals’
Council (ACPC) and Regional Institute of Science & Technology, supported by
State Bank of India on 23rd July, 2014 with an aim to streamline the
education institutions, knowing each other’s potentials & working together to
create a healthy and conducive environment for the promotion of educational
scenario of the region. The highlight of the conclave was a Seminar on
“Higher Education in North East with reference to Rashtriya Uchchatar Siksha
Abhiyan (RUSA)”. Eminent Scientist and honourable former President of
India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had graced the valedictory session of the
conclave and addressed the College principals as well as the school students of
the vicinity with his valuable words. Dr. Kalam urged the Principals to
emphasize on Science & Innovation to be cultured in educational institutions for
the greater benefit of the students of the region as well as the country which
will be a step towards Technological advancement to make India a developed
country. He also mentioned that the North eastern region is full of vibrant
potentials and this is the high time to explore them.
The function was also
graced by Dr. Mihir Kanti Chaudhury, VC of Tezpur University and Dr. Mridul
Hazarika, VC of Gauhati University. Shri R. S. Mooshahary, Former Governor of
Meghalaya had inaugurated the conclave.
More than five hundred
college principals of all the Degree Colleges of Assam as well as the other NE
states, teachers and renowned academicians of the region as well as a large
number of students attended the function.
• Official Launch of “Social Cultural and Economic Rights of Assam in North
East Indian States”: Assam Youth for Change in association with USTM
launched the Women’s Campaign in relation to Social Cultural and Economic Rights
of Assam in North East Indian States on November 09, 2014. The Program was
inaugurated by Ms. Deborah C. Marak, Honourable Minister, Social Welfare, Govt.
of Meghalaya. A Panel Discussion on the topic was also organized which was
attended by Ms. Rumi Nath, MLA, Assam; Ms. Meera Borthakur, Political Activist;
Ms. Geetanjali Bhattacharjee, Rights Activist; Ms. Shreemoyee Raina Sharma,
Child Life Specialist and a host of other dignitaries. The panel discussion was
moderated by Dr. Alaka Sarma Dean, Students’ Welfare, USTM. A Case Study on “The
Actual Facts of Women Discrimination- Poverty, Education, Health & Empowerment”
was presented on the occasion by Dr. Parbin Sultana, Faculty, USTM.
• National Education
Day & Science Day observed : To commemorate the birth anniversary of
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the Prof. Quomrul Hoque School of Education, USTM
celebrated National Education Day with a day long programme including a seminar
entitled “Modern Innovations in Education” on November 11, 2014 at
the University premises. Dr Gayatree Goswami and Dr Dulumoni Goswami, Associate
Professors, Deptt. of Education, Guahati University graced the occasion as
Guests of Honour. In her address Dr. Gayatree Goswami stressed on strengthening
the quality of education in India as education is a critical pillar of human
development. She spoke on the instrumental role that teachers can play by
imbibing the right knowledge, values and skills necessary for the students to
cope with the world of tomorrow and by utilizing education as the ethical filter
of the society. Dr. Goswami stated that USTM can play the role of a model
University by helping to eradicate the evils such as child labour and minimal
access to education by providing scholarships to poor students. She further
stressed on the need to restructure the academic syllabi and curriculum of the
institutions providing the degree of education to suffice the needs of the
present society. Dr. Dulumoni Goswami delivered the keynote address during the
seminar and said that education is the engine of growth for the nation in the
path of attaining self sufficiency. She said that the present age can be tagged
as the age of explosion of knowledge, information and expectations because of
which there is a global change in the scenario of education.
• Scholar-Guide Meet: USTM has organized a “Research Scholars’ and
Guides’ Meet” for the smooth functioning of the research works ongoing in
the departments of various schools on January 3, 2015. The intention behind this
meet is to give emphasis on the research and development initiatives of USTM and
bring all the research scholars, guides and faculties in the same platform to
share each other’s knowledge and to see the progress of the scholars.
• National Seminar organized during North East Teachers Congress -2014 :
A National Seminar on “Changing Scenario in Academic Performance & Audit” was
conducted during the second North East Teachers Congress (NETC) organised by
University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya in association with Regional
Institute of Science and Technology & CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat on 4th January 2015.
The seminar was attended by eminent scientists and academicians from North East
and national level namely Pro G D Sharma, Honourable Vice Chancelor of Bilaspur
University, Prof Bolin Kr Konwar, Honourable Vice Chancelor of Nagaland
University, Prof B C Goswami, Director of Academic Staff College, GU, Dr. D. D.
Ozha, Senior Scientist, Ground Water Dept from Jodhpur, Dr. R M Pant, Director
of NIRD and many other renowned personalities from the academic fraternity of
the region. The congress was attended by around five hundred College Teachers
from the North Eastern states.
• Junior College
Principals’ Meet (JCPM) – 2015 : The 2nd Junior College Principals’ Meet (JCPM)
was successfully organized by Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST)
in association with University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) on
5th January, 2015. More than one hundred Principals of various Junior
Colleges and Higher Secondary Schools from all over North Eastern region have
participated in the daylong event. Dr. Kulendu Pathak, Former Vice Chancellor of
Dibrugarh University was the Chief Guest of the event. The Meet was presided
over by Dr. P.G. Rao, Honourable Vice Chancellor of USTM. Dr PC Mahanta,
Director, RIST, Dr Alaka Desai Sarma, Dean, USTM along with a host of other
distinguished and eminent educationist was also present on the occasion. JCPM is
an effort of ERD Foundation, Guwahati, to throw light on the various problems
and to come up with solutions faced by the Colleges and Higher Secondary
Schools. The theme of this year’s Meet was “Infrastructure Development and Image
Building of Junior Colleges in the NE Region”. Eminent Educationist, Dr. Gayatri
Goswami, Dr. Farhana Perveen, Dr. Dinesh Baishya and few others have offered
their valuable suggestions on various burning problems and solutions thereof.
• VC, JNU delivered
talk at USTM : Honourable Vice Chancelllor of Jawaharlal Nehru University,
New Delhi Prof SK Sopory, who is a renowned Biotechnologist of the country
delivered a talk in an interactive session on the topic “Emerging trends & scope
of Higher Education and Research in the field of Biological Sciences” on 31st
January, 2015. The talk was attended by the faculty members, research
scholars and students of USTM as well as Cotton College, Guwahati.
• Workshop on Fuzzy
Logic: A one day Workshop on Foundation of Fuzzy Set and Fuzzy Logic was
held at RIST on February 7, 2015 in collaboration with NIT Silchar and
USTM. The objective of the workshop was to give an idea of real life application
and to develop a basic idea of Fuzzy Sets and application of Fuzzy Logic in the
computational domain. Dr. Ashok Deshpande, Founding Chair, Berkeley Initiative
in Soft Computing (BISC) - Special interest Group (SIG) - Environment Management
Systems (EMS) was the chief speaker of the workshop. Dr. Deshpande holds a Ph.
D. degree in Engineering and Technology and was Deputy Director, National
Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) /CSIR. He is a Visiting
Professor in Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai and Adjunct Professor in
College of Engineering, University of Pune. He has over 4 decades of experience
in R&D and has to his credit over 120 publications in Journals of international
repute. The workshop was attended by 15 participants from RIST and USTM and 10
from other institutions.
• Workshop on CISCO
Networking : A two days workshop on “Cisco Networking” was organised by IBNC
on 13th and 14th February, 2015 in association with IIT Delhi in the
department of Computer Science and Electronics of USTM. The workshop was
innaugurated by hon’bl e Vice Chancellor Dr. P.G. Rao by lightening the lamp.
Mr. Niraj Kumar, resource person from IBNC trained the participants
theoretically and practically on configuration on Cisco Routers & Switches,
Routing and switching protocol concepts with implementation, Ipv4 and Ipv6
addressing, Sub netting, creating live network on Cisco Routers and switches. At
the end of the 2nd day of the workshop a competition was conducted among the
participants. Two students from BCA were selected as winners. Winners will get
direct entry to the IBNC grand finale round at IIT Delhi. The interactive
sessions were very fruitful, interesting and inspiring for the participants.
• Workshop on 'Accounting and
Tally' : A four-day Workshop on 'Accounting and Tally' has been organised by
Department of Economics & Commerce, USTM from 14th March 2015.
• Workshop on Current
Application of Remote Sensing & GIS : The Department of Earth Science, USTM
in collaboration with North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC), Department
of Space, Govt. of India had successfully organised a National Level Workshop on
“Current Application of Remote Sensing & GIS” from 6th to 11th April, 2015.
• Interactive talk on
'Financial Inclusion' : Coinciding with the launch of Pradhan Mantri
Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY)
and Atal Pension Yojana (APY), the School of Business Sciences (SBUS) of
University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) conducted an interactive
session on “Financial Inclusion and Development” at its conference hall on 9th

threatening plant species: Speakers : A one-day National Seminar on “
Sustainable Utilization of Plant Resources of North East India ” was held on the
23rd of May, 2015 in Department of Botany, GU organised jointly by Department of
Botany, Gauhati University and University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya.

• Workshop on 'Corporate
Social Responsibility' : The department of Business Administration and
Social Work organized a one day workshop on 'Corporate Social Responsibility,
Industrial Dispute Act 1947, Contract Labour Regulation and Abolition Act 1970',
on 30th May 2015 at the techno city campus. Mr. K Ahmed, Project Advisor, i-STED
Project, was present as a guest of honour during the ocasion.
• The “National Seminar
on Convergence of Technologies in LIS – 2015” Organized on 16th and 17th
July, 2015 by Dept. of Library and Information Science, University of Science
and Technology, Meghalaya in Collaboration with Assam College Librarians’
Association (ACLA) and Dr. S. K. B. Library, Cotton College was concluded
successfully on 17th July, 2015.
• Bio Science
experts and technocrats from across the country who had gathered for the three
day National Conference on ‘IPR in Bio Sciences for Scientists from North
East Indian States’ at the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM)
were unanimous in their resolution that a special core group be set up for
creating awareness about IPR in the North Eastern States of India so that
students, researchers, scholars and all other end users of technology could
derive maximum benefit from it. This resolution came during the valedictory
session of the Conference held on Thursday. In his presidential remarks, Dr PG
Rao, VC of USTM suggested that the core group could function from Guwahati and
experts from ICAR, ICMR, Central-State-Private universities could be its
• National Seminar on
“Understanding Social Exclusion”: The department of Sociology and Social
Work in collaboration with the Assam Institute of Tribals and Scheduled Castes,
Government of Assam(AIRTSC), organized a one day national seminar on
“Understanding Social Exclusion: Perspectives from India’s North East”, on 25th
July 2015 at the university premises. Prof A C Bhagawati, former Vice Chancellor
of Rajiv Gandhi University was present as the Chief Guest in the inaugural
ceremony of the seminar.
