Sociologists study social life, social change diverse communities and their interactions. They use scientific methods to find empirical answers to complex social questions. Emphasis is also on field trips, workshops and seminars for wider and practical exposure on the subject-matter. Department of English

Academic Focus:

The Department of English, of the University of Science and Technology was set up in 2013. The Department is interested in introducing innovative ideas within the traditional area of English Literary Studies, and promoting research activities that reflect the diversity of the place in which the University is located. The goal of the Department is to produce students who are responsible citizens and can make significant contributions to society.
The Department has a dedicated team of teachers who are interested in the overall development of the students. It is committed to encouraging students to rigorously pursue academic excellence. It teaches a student the value of hard work, dedication and the importance of adhering to schedules.
It also, attempts to nurture the students' innate talents in an atmosphere where learning can also be filled with joy. The Department is also a place which provides a student lessons on life. This is possible because of the close rapport between students and faculty.
The BA Course with Major in English has been designed to provide students a methodical foundation in literature written in English from the Anglo Saxon Period to the present. The course is not restricted to literature produced in the British Isles; it will introduce students to literature written in English from the United States of America and India. The course seeks to initiate students to contemporary literary theory and show the students how literature is connected to culture and society. This should help the students realize the importance of interdisciplinary studies.
The BA (Major) course also offers four optional areas; these options allow students to exercise their individual preference, however, the Department, reserves the right to offer optional papers depending on the number of students opting for a particular course and the availability of faculty.

Career Scope:

Studying English Literature, one can choose from a number of jobs, such as teaching, publishing, writing, advertising, research or translation. Becoming a scriptwriter or author is another possibility. Publishing houses also commission to author books.

Starting from the context of students and then move to local, National and International aspects, this discipline aims to combine the broadening of students horizon with a sharpening of their intellectual skills and knowledge through the study of composite discipline of Education.
USTM in order to cater to the needs and demand of Education discipline at Post Graduate level is set to offer MA in Education from this current session under school of Social Sciences and Humanities
Psychology is best defined as the science of behaviour and cognitive process. Every aspects of mental life are related to psychology. Modern human life encounters various stress and problems such as problem related to education, health environment, intergroup relations, marital relations, daily life hassles etc. The field of psychology deals in providing interventions at individual level as well as group level that is needed to bring changes in human life and provide relief by easing the tension caused due to various problems that human beings are facing today by providing effective solution.
This Bachelor programme in psychology (B.A) includes both theoretical and practical exposure along with internship programme and field visit to various related organization such as Rehabilitation centres, shelter homes, de-addiction centres, NGO's, educational set up etc.
 

Career Scope:

Students can select diverse fields of specialization which would help in career opportunities in the field of education. Education is offered as Major and general in undergraduate level in most of the Degree colleges and as Discipline at Post Graduate level both at Public and very few Private Universities in NE region of the country.
Psychologists play an active role in designing and executing intervention programme with a view to provide better quality of life to human beings. Realising the vital and active role that a Psychologist can play, quite a good number of psychologist are seen working in diverse areas such as schools , hospital settings, industries organization set up, prisons, military establishment family and social welfare, shelter homes, rehabilitation centres, etc. An appropriate number of psychologists are also seen doing private practice as consultants and counsellors to help people in solving problems concerned areas.
