The School of Applied Sciences endeavours to impart education on fundamentals of science so that students can well appreciate the intricacies of day to day problems. Department of Earth Sciences

Academic focus:

Earth Science is an all-embracing term for the sciences related to the planet Earth. It is arguably a special case in planetary science, the Earth being the only known life-bearing planet. The formal discipline of Earth sciences may include the study of Geology, Geography, Geophysics, Soil Science, environment, etc. The department presently runs three Master's Degree programmes, viz. MA in Disaster Management, MA Geography and M.Sc in Environmental Science. Disaster Management is mainly the process which deals with the preparedness, mitigation and prevention from any kind of extreme events occurring in nature. Geography is the study of the diverse environments, places, and spaces of the Earth's surface and their interactions. Environmental Science is a multidisciplinary subject which is relevant to all other subjects and is applicable almost in every aspect of life. Environmental Science is one of the burning and an emerging subject of global concern.

Career Scope:

Geography has wide career scopes like Academician, Cartographer, Commercial / Residential Surveyor, Town Planner, Transport Planner, Development Worker, Researcher, Trainer, Environmental Consultant / Planner, Geographical Information System Officer, Planning and Development Surveyor, Meteorologist etc. M.Sc in Environmental Science provides a wide variety of employment opportunity in government sector, private sector, NGOs, international organizations, consultancy, national/multinational firms, academics and researches, refineries and mines, plant fertilizer, food processing units, engineering, journalism, pollution control boards and many other sectors like forestry, agriculture, water resource management, rural and urban development, tourism, biodiversity and wildlife management, etc.

Physics is the branch of science which deals with the physical parameters. It has wide variety of application in day to day activities in all types of industries. Various specializations are there in Physics include Condensed Matter Physics, Electronics, High Energy Physics and Astro Physics. University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya is going to start Master's Degree programme (M.Sc.) in Physics from 2016 session. The department as a part of USTM will take guidance from CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, CSIR-CRRI, NIT, Silchar, Gauhati University & Tezpur University with which USTM has already signed MoU.

Career Scope:

There is immense potentialities for post graduates in Physics to pursue advanced research or in industries as skilled Physicist. After completing M.Sc degree any student can easily pursue research which enables them to go for their dream organizations like BARC, ISRO, CSIR, Defance, Oil Sector, DRDO and many other national and international industries as well as research organisations. Moreover, teaching at graduate and post-graduate levels like in different Universities, Graduate colleges etc. also require a large number of well qualified faculty at M.Sc. and Ph.D. Levels


Career in Private sector after M.Sc in Physics:
