The School of Applied Sciences
endeavours to impart education of fundamentals so that students can well
appreciate the intricacies of day to day problems. All academic programs
emphasise the integration of the basic sciences within an interdisciplinary
approach with the expressed intention of encouraging research, innovation and
motivation of students to work within a diverse range of professional
situations. The School has the following Departments under it:
Department of Chemistry
India is a place where higher
study is given a very high preference, so today in the competitive world it
plays a very vital role. Today Master Degree in India is providing a base
platform for those who want to get involved in higher studies and to get some
good results in future. Chemistry is a multidisciplinary subject. All the
branches of Science need chemistry. It is the branch of science which deals with
the study of chemicals. Various specializations are there in chemistry.
Specializations include Organic, Inorganic, Physical, analytical chemistry etc.
University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya started Master's Degree
programme (M.Sc.) in Chemistry from 2012 session. The department as a part of
USTM has made collaborations with CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, different R&D
organizations, IITs, CRRI-New Delhi, Hi-Tec Ireland and many other universities.
There is immense potentialities
for post graduates in chemistry a to pursue advanced research or in industries
as skilled chemists. Investigations are on for discovery of new molecules
wherein chemistry personnel are in great demand in R & D. Discovery of new
molecules for specific action on human diseases such as cancer, AIDS etc has led
to expansion of drug industry. So, after completing M.Sc degree any student can
easily pursue research which enables them to go for their dream organizations
like BARC, ISRO, CSIR, Defance, Oil Sector, DRDO and many other national and
international pharmaceutical industries as well as research organisations.
Moreover, teaching at graduate and post-graduate levels like in different
Universities, Graduate colleges etc. also require a large number of well
qualified faculty at M.Sc. and Ph.D. Levels.

Department of Earth Sciences
Earth Science is an all-embracing term for the sciences related to the planet
Earth. It is arguably a special case in planetary science, the Earth being the
only known life-bearing planet. The formal discipline of Earth sciences may
include the study of Geology, Geography, Geophysics, Soil Science, environment,
etc. The department presently runs three Master's Degree programmes, viz. MA in
Disaster Management, MA Geography and M Sc Environmental Science. Disaster
Management is mainly the process which deals with the preparedness, mitigation
and prevention from any kind of extreme events occurring in nature. Geography is
the study of the diverse environments, places, and spaces of the Earth's surface
and their interactions. Environmental Science is a multidisciplinary subject
which is relevant to all other subjects and is applicable almost in every aspect
of life. Environmental Science is one of the burning and an emerging subject of
Geography has wide career scopes
like Academician, Cartographer, Commercial / Residential Surveyor, Town Planner,
Transport Planner, Development Worker, Researcher, Trainer, Environmental
Consultant / Planner, Geographical Information System Officer, Planning and
Development Surveyor, Meteorologist etc.
M.Sc Environmental Science provides a wide variety of employment opportunity in
government sector, private sector, NGOs, international organizations,
consultancy, national / multinational firms, academics and researches,
refineries and mines, plant fertilizer, food processing units, engineering,
journalism, pollution control boards and many other sectors like forestry,
agriculture, water resource management, rural and urban development, tourism,
biodiversity and wildlife management, etc.
Department of Physics:
Master Degree in India is
providing a base platform for those who want to get involved in higher education
and to get good results in future. Physics is the branch of science which deals
with the physical parameters. It has wide varity of application in day to day
activities in all types of industries. Various specializations are there in
Physics include Condensed Matter Physics, Electronics,High Energy Physics and
Astro Physics. University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya is going to start
Master's Degree programme (M.Sc.) in Physics from 2016 session. The department
as a part of USTM will take guidance from CSIR-NEIST, Jorhat, CSIR-CRRI, NIT,
Silchar, Gauhati University & Tezpur University with which USTM has already

Department of Mathematics:
The study of mathematics is quite
important both, at the basic level and in its applied form. It is believed that
basic science such as mathematical science can be thought as the bread you eat
for breakfast, and technology as the butter you spread over it. You can't depend
solely on butter without having bread.
Wherever you go, whether it is economics or consultancy or computer science,
mathematics is necessary for the execution of plans. In industry too, in order
to compute inventory lapses, mathematical sciences play a very important role.
