About the University

Founded in 2011, the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) is the first private science and technology university in the north-eastern region of India. The University is located in a 400 acre picturesque landscape surrounded by tranquil greenery in the Assam-Meghalaya border, 6 kms from Dispur, the capital of Assam and 85 kms from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya state and is well connected by road, rail and air transport.  The basic motivation of USTM has been to encourage the advancement, dissemination, development and application of knowledge and groom leaders who are not only thoroughly professional but also good human beings. Sponsored by ERD Foundation, USTM has the provision of a range of courses of study and research built up so as to meet the needs of the community, the region and the nation as a whole.
The University was established under the provisions of the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya Act (No.6 of 2008) enacted by the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya and notified vide Gazette Notification No. LL (B) 87/2008/21, dated 02.12.2008 of Government of Meghalaya.  USTM is empowered by University Grants Commission to award degrees as specified under Section 22 of UGC Act, 1956. It has received approvals of –

USTM offers varied and content rich programmes focused on the educational needs of the region and has a multi-disciplinary approach. In 2011, the University started its classes with only 6 students. However, within a brief period of time, the University has reached newer heights and at present more than 5,000 students are pursuing higher education here. Of these, currently 800+ students are availing free education and scholarships, 80% of them belonging to rural background and 57% being girl students.
The University is dedicated to the cause of high quality science and technology education and advanced research in frontier and cutting-edge areas where innovation, invention and entrepreneurship remain the cardinal focus and thrust. Creating the best graduates who can think, innovate and invent remain the all time driving force of USTM. The University offers different courses at graduate, post graduate and research level under its eight Schools:

USTM has regularly taken initiative for collaboration and tie ups with reputed national and international institutions and organisations and signed MoUs  with a number of organisations such as Aligarh Muslim University, Asam Sahitya Sabha, IIT-Guwahati, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi, Tezpur University, Gauhati University, University of Dhaka, Uskudar University, Istanbul, Turkey, Fatih Sultan Mehmet University, Istanbul, Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University, Ankara, Turkey, Selcuk University, Konya, Turkey, Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI), Guwahati, Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT), MoFPI, Government of India.
USTM is quite successful in the aspect of networking with people, organisations of repute, especially top academic institutions across the country and abroad. USTM has worked out linkages and networking in a way no other institution from the North East of India has so far been able to do. Regular holding of high profile events such as North East Graduate Congress (NEGC) which has become the biggest annual congregation of young students of the entire north-eastern region is a positive feature of the University. This is totally an innovative step undertaken by the University connecting the people for the cause of education which has been appreciated by academic fraternity. Similarly, North East Teachers Congress (NETC), North East College Principals Conclave (NCPC) have not only facilitated convergence and sharing of thoughts and new ideas, but they also have worked as catalysts for setting in place a strong system for ongoing networking for student and faculty exchange programmes, collaboration in research and development projects and holding of joint projects. Some more flagship initiatives undertaken by USTM are the Centre for Innovation, Debate & Quiz Forum, Women’s Driving School and Outreach initiatives like adoption of villages by every Department.
USTM had hosted a large number of events where dignitaries including Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India; Central Ministers like Dr Najma Heptulla, Kiran Rijiju, Governors & Chief Ministers of different states, AS Kiran Kumar, Chairman, ISRO, Vice Chancellors of top Universities and Nobel Laureate, Kailash Satyarthi, had graced the occasions.
The University offers a number of scholarships and financial assistance for meritorious and poor undergraduate and postgraduate students. More than 2,500 students have already availed of these scholarships and concessions. In addition, USTM has initiated numerous other welfare activities such as scholarships, endowment funds, fellowships, emergency treatment & medical assistance for poor & economically weaker sections of society, Interest free Loans, Marriage loans, awareness campaigns & rallies/street plays, relief drives etc. A unique payback policy is introduced where students who have qualified NET/SLET/IAS or other competitive examination are paid back their admission as well as semester fees.
 Institutions are never an end to themselves. Development takes place as new challenges and opportunities occur. At USTM, The University has set its three missions as goals to achieve—“Mission  Bronze” to make USTM a top university in the East by 2020, “Mission Silver”—to become one of the top universities in the country by 2025 and “Mission Gold”—to become one of the world class universities by 2030.
