“Come & Join hands in this mission to make
this world eco-friendly” – Dr. P G Rao, VC, USTM

The World Habitat Day at
University of Science & Technology Meghalaya had been celebrated with all
enthusiasm and fanfare today. The intention is to create awareness and
consciousness amongst the students of USTM about the necessity of maintaining
ecological balance and natural resources.
It has been three decades since the United Nations General Assembly took an
important step in promoting the idea that everyone deserves a decent place to
live by declaring that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day.
The department of Botany at USTM observed World Habitat Day as a token gesture
of our solidarity to that ethos “Habitat For Humanity”, to rededicate ourselves
to recognizing the basic right of everyone to adequate shelter. Habitat for
Humanity asks everyone to join together as one global network in communicating
the message that every one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future,
and that a decent place to live can remove barriers to opportunity, health and
success that might have been part of a family’s life for years, and in many
cases for generations.
At the inaugural session, Prof. Parimal Chandra Bhattacharya, former HoD,
Zoology, GU had delivered a talk on ‘impact of biodiversity hot spots” and
portrayed different attributes of diversity and the resources of nature
particularly in the NE Region. He emphasized specifically the structural and
functional components of eco-system where he cited the devastating impact of
habitat destruction due to human infiltration and how it had led to the near
extinction of the fawna and flora. It was followed by the plantation program by
the USTM students and dignitaries present at the ceremony. Dr. P G Rao, VC, USTM
had warned the students about the impact of random urbanization and how it will
lead to destruction of ecological balance. Sh. Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM
emphasized the utility of such consciousness-raising programs so that more
awareness can be created. A departmental wall magazine titled “TULIP” was
released and a series of competitions on extempore speech, quiz and
