Meghalaya Students Attended DST-
INSPIRE program at USTM
University of Science
and Technology, Meghalaya has been entrusted with the responsibility of
conducting the INSPIRE INTERNSHIP SCIENCE CAMP from 2nd - 6thNovember 2015 by
the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. The Science Camp is held
to motivate and inspire the talented students to take up Science and Research as
a career. The Science Camps was addressed by top scientists of North East India,
academicians and eminent authors of science and technology from different
universities of repute. The students were also exposed to hands-on experience in
advanced laboratories and several activities led by invited professors from
different institutions and universities. More than seventy students from various
schools of Meghalaya like, St Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, St
Margaret’s Higher Secondary School Shillong, JNV Williannagar and Christ
International School Barapani have participated in the camp. Being a science and
technology university USTM encourages these types of events and thus hopeful to
cover more number of schools in future science camps.
During the inaugural program Prof N Rajmuhon Singh from the Department of
Chemistry and Prof N Debananda from the department of Biochemistry from Manipur
University were present as the chief guests.
Prof Rajmuhon Singh while inspiring the participants during his speech
highlighted the role of youth in the development of science, technology and
innovations, whereas Prof N. Debananda shared many inspirational stories of
great scientific innovations, research, new developments in various science
streams to raise the interest of the students for new and exciting scientific
The five days camp was eventful, where the students have exposed to different hi
tech laboratories of biological sciences, life sciences, bio-technology and
engineering labs of USTM for hands-on experiments and moderations on various
scientific phenomenons. Several eminent guest speakers from different
universities and institutions like Prof R K Bhola and Dr Dandadhar Sarma from
the Deptt. of Zoology, Gauhati University(GU), Prof Ng Ibohal Singh, Professor
Deptt of Mathematics Manipur University(MU), Prof R K Bhubon, Deptt. of
Chemistry,MU; and Prof N Nimai Singh, Deptt of Physics, GU.
A science quiz competition was also organized where St Anthony’s Higher
Secondary School acquired the first position while St Margaret’s Higher
Secondary School stood in second position.
During the Valedictory session on the concluding day, Prof N Mohilal Meitei,Prof
and Dean Students Welfare, MU, has graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In
his address to the student participants he stressed on the need of more research
oriented works in Northeast. He also urged the students to take more active part
in such science camps like INSPIRE.
The students from participating schools have shared their experiences at this
camp during the concluding program and express their gratitude towards the USTM
family for organizing such a wonderful event. The prizes for the quiz
competition were given away during the occasion. Dr Y Lokeshwor Singh, Assistant
Professor from the department of Zoology, USTM and Coordinator of the Science
camp delivered the vote of thanks.
