“International Day for Girl child”
observed by USTM

The Women’s Cell of University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) in
association with the NGO, Stop Human Trafficking, NE (SHT- NE) had organized a
programme to observe the fourth annual “International Day for Girl Child”, on
11th October 2015, at the premises of Dighalipukhuri. Eminent author Ms Juri
Bora Borgohain was the guest of honor of the event. Students of USTM walked in
the form of a rally with placards to sensitize the community on Girl child
This year’s theme focuses on adolescent girls and the Sustainable Development
Goals, which set a range of international targets, including on gender equality,
to be achieved by 2030. USTM joined the global efforts to ensure a world free of
discrimination for young women and girls.
Mrs Borgohain highlighted on different issues and challenges faced by the
younger women and girl child in our society, especially in Northeastern region.
The chairperson of the Women’s Cell, Dr Alaka Desai Sarma had stressed on the
need of participation of educated women in our society to fight for the rights
of girl child and younger women.
A large number of students, senior officials and faculty members of the varsity
had participated in the program and joined the awareness rally.
