February 23 : The North
East Graduate Congress-2014 organized by University of Science & Technology,
Meghalaya, sponsored by State Bank of India concluded today at USTM campus,
Techno city in the outskirt of Guwahati. More than three thousand students from
North Eastern States participated in the two day long programme and took part in
various events exchanging views and ideas, mixing with each other, virtually
making the Congress a melting pot of all North Eastern States.
His Excellency Shri J. B. Patnaik,
honourable Governor of Assam inaugurated the North East Graduate Congress on
22nd February, 2014. The inaugural ceremony was attended by Dr.Dhruba
J.Saikia,Vice Chancellor ,Cotton College State University,Dr.Mridul Hazarika,
Vice Chancellor,Gauhati University, Shri Farooq Shahab, General Manager,State
Bank of India, North East Circle, Dr.N.K.Choudhury ,former Vice Chancellor,
Gauhati University and Sri Subimal Bhattacharjee, renowned cyber security
The concluding day was marked by
two panel discussions. The first panel discussion on Micro Finance,
Entrepreneurship and Bank Loan was chaired by D. Alaka Desai Sarma, Dean, School
of Business Sciences, USTM where esteem speakers were Dr. P.G. Rao former
Director of CSIR-NEIST and Pro Chancellor, USTM and Mr. Sunil Saikia, former
Director, Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship. The other panel discussion which
evoked huge interest of participating students was Politics, Corruption and
Youth Leadership chaired jointly by Prof Noni Gopal Mahanta of Gauhati
University and N.I. Laskar, Executive Editor of Eastern Chronicle which was
actively participated by P.J. Barua, Executive Editor, Assam Tribune, Dr. Mridul
Hazarika, VC, GU, Gaurav Gogoi, Pradyut Borah of BJP, Dr. Muzibur Rahman,
Renowned columnist Col. Monoranjan Goswami, Kishore Upadhayay of AGP, Prabir
Kumar Dutta, former Chief Secretary,Assam, Kamakhya Prasad Tassa of BJP and Dr.
Dinesh Baishya, Dean, School of Media and Cultural studies, USTM. Students took
interest in the panel discussion and interacted with the speakers putting many
The event was marked by debates,
quiz, extempore speech, write up and model exhibition competitions for which
attractive prizes of lap tops, i-Pads and Mobile phones were distributed to the
winners. Jintu Gogoi of Assam School of Journalism bagged first prize in
debating competition while Uddipana Goswami of Biswanath College walked away
with first prize in debating competition. In quiz competition Monoj Kumar Barman
and Pratik Baruah of Gauhati Commerce College were adjudged winners .In
extempore speech competition Mayuri Goswami of Handique Girls College got the
first prize. Trishna Barman got the first prize in write up competition on Dr.
Bhupen Hazarika. The first prize for Model Exibition went to Ranbir Singh of
Regional Institute of Science & Technology.The most coveted prize of the North
East Graduate congress went to Janmoni Borah of Chaiduar College , Gohpur who
was adjudged as best participant and was awarded ten thousand cash prize.
The focus of first day was panel
discussions on Higher & Professional Education & Research, chaired by Dr.
P.G.Rao former Director, CSIR-NEIST; session on Competitive Examination chaired
by Shri Prof Dilip Barua, former Principal Cotton College, Personality
Development & Soft Skill, chaired by Mr. N. I. Laskar, Executive Editor ,Eastern
Chronicle and Dr. Mukulesh Barua.
The valedictory session was held
in presence of Dr. D. Ramaiah, Director,CSIR-NEIST Dr.R.C.Baruah,outstanding
scientist CSIR- NEIST, Prof H.K Das, Pro VC, Assam Down Town University, Dr.P.G.
Rao Pro Chancellor USTM and M.Hoque ,Chancellor ,USTM.
The North East Graduate Congress
was organised with the aim to enhance all-round development and bring out
capabilities of the future graduates through various life skill processes to
bring out their inherent capabilities and expose them to various opportunities.
