Visionary Entrepreneurs conferred Hon. Degrees by Meghalaya Governor at USTM Special Convocation
9thMile, Ri Bhoi, 11 February, 2019: For their outstanding contribution to the society at large, four eminent and internationally acclaimed personalities from different fields ranging from education and entrepreneurship to industry and philanthropy have received Hon. D.Litt. and D.Sc. from the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM)today at a Special Convocation ceremony held at Central Auditorium of USTM. The Degrees were conferred by Shri Tathagata Roy, Governor of Meghalaya and Visitor, USTM in the presence of Shri Lakhmen Rymbui, Minister of Education, Meghalaya; Mr Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM;Lt Gen Zamir Uddin Shah, Pro Chancellor, USTM; Dr P K Goswami, Vice Chancellor, USTM, apart from others.
Receiving the Hon. D.Sc. from USTM, the USA-based entrepreneur, philanthropist, author, civic leader, and thought leader Mr Frank Fakhrul Islam said that students are the promised potential of the world and that “the growth of USTM in less than a decade shows that the University will soon be an educational empowerment zone”.The recipients of the Hon. D.Litt. Degrees include, UAE based entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr P A Ibrahim Haji, eminent educationist from Shillong and Former Chairman of UPSC, New Delhi Prof David R Syiemlieh; and the Singapore-based entrepreneur and industrialist Mr Sudip Dutta. Earlier, welcoming the dignitaries, Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM expressed his gratitude to the four outstanding personalities from different parts of the world for showing their magnanimous gesture by accepting the honour conferred by USTM.
The programme was presided over by the Governor of Meghalaya. The Convocation Address was delivered by the Education Minister of Meghalaya. Earlier, Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM welcomed the dignitaries and said that the University takes pride to honour the successful multifaceted and brilliant personalities and thanked them for coming to receive the Hon. Degrees from far away countries.
D.Sc. recipient Mr Frank Islam hails from Azamgarh town in Uttar Pradesh. Mr. Islam currently heads the FI Investment Group, a private investment holding company that he established in 2007 after he sold his information technology firm, the QSS Group. He founded the QSS Group in 1994 and built it from 1 employee to more than 2,000 employees and revenues of approximately $300 million before its sale. :
Mr Sudip Dutta who is the Founder and Chairman of Ess Dee Aluminium Ltd., India which is India's largest manufacturer of Aluminium foil based packaging material. In 2009, Forbes India bestowed upon him the title of "The Wrapper Tycoon". His entrepreneurial journey started in 1991 in Mumbai with 12 employees with a pouching unit for making sachets used for packing oral re-hydration powders by local pharmaceutical companies.
Dr PA Ibrahim shifted from Kerala to Muscat in
1971. Nine years of service in various business organizations in India, Dubai
and Muscat have prepared him to start a business of his own, and he started a
garment retail business in Dubai in 1974. TodayDr Ibrahim is the founder and
Vice-Chairman of Indus Motors Company in India; chairman of the UAE-based
Century International Travels; chairman of P A Engineering Collage, P A First
Grade College, PA Pre-University
College, PA Polytechnic (Mangalore), Gulf Asian English School (Sharjah), India
International School (Kuwait), Managing Director of AL-Shamali Group in
Garments and Textiles.
